If GUI has become unresponsive because an app has crashed, you can use ttys to avoid having to do a reboot.
Ctrl+Alt+F2 switches to a full screen terminal where you can start killing processes.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches you back to your (hopefully no longer crashed) GUI
That’s something I learned in the late ‘00s to restart xserver because of dodgy graphics driver support, but I seem to have had to start doing again because of flatplaks or Thunderbird 😫
